As a photographer in an international fashion industry, Stian Foss has also cultivated his own projects. Module 35 shows a selection of his personal photographs.
Stian Foss has worked in New York and Paris with international fashion magazines and high-profiled persons in fashion photography like Alasdair McLellan, Hedi Slimane and Craig McDean. Beeing from Birkeland, a small place in southern Norway, he was attracted to the big city. After graduating at The Norwegian School of Photography, he traveled to New York and the School of Visual Arts where he worked in the fashion photography business. After a long time in the big city, a longing grows back to nature. It is this tension between the urban life and nature that appears in the exhibition Between Concrete and Nature.
In his own projects, we can see Stian's personal touch more than in editorial and commercial work. The pictures are excerpts from different series in the last 15 years, where individual images form new contexts, a red thread and themes emerge from many years of work. He balances unmatched and sensitive portraits with landscape and natural still life. Here is a fascination of how nature slowly penetrates the asphalt jungle, how concrete is also a landscape, - how at the same time the attraction of the urban life and longing back to the natural state appears.
